This council is the only decision making and action taking body of the United Nations. The Security Council is basically responsible of maintaining international peace and security through putting sanctions on countries, authorizing military actions and commencing peacekeeping operations.
It consists of 15 delegations, 5 being permanent and 10 being temporary. The 5 permanent members of the council, namely USA, France, UK, Russian Federation and People’s Republic of China, founded the council after the Second World War and possess the veto power. The temporary members are elected on a two-year basis by the General Assembly. The council has some special rules of procedure such as the nine-vote majority needed to pass any clause or resolution.
